In 1913, a sixty-year-old Buddhist nun in Kanagawa, Japan, was robbed and raped by a mysterious figure in “tattered robes.”

A year later, in the same locality, a fifty-eight-year-old nun had her tongue decapitated before being beaten to death. Witnesses stated that it was done by a man with a “disfigured nose.”
